Andres Gimenez is avoiding an MRI for now, and John Schneider sounds cautiously optimistic.

The manager said Gimenez "felt better, actually, on exam, good strength and good mobility."

That's a real step up from how the exit looked when Gimenez didn't return to the game.

Schneider said the plan is to wait and see how his infielder feels Friday morning before deciding anything more.

"We'll see if he wakes up Friday, hopefully dodging another bullet," Schneider said.

No MRI is scheduled at this point. "He's not going to get an MRI right now, see how he wakes up Friday and go from there," Schneider added.

That's the language of a team hoping this stays minor, without overcommitting to anything just yet.

Why Toronto can't afford to lose Gimenez right now

Gimenez has been part of a Blue Jays defense that's had to adjust on the fly whenever injuries hit this season.

He's carrying real momentum into this scare too, hitting well over his last several games before exiting early.

Toronto is already managing a lineup without Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who's working his way back from the concussion IL.

Adding an extended absence for Gimenez on top of that would stretch this roster even thinner during the stretch run.

The Blue Jays sit at 62-66, one game back of a wild-card spot, a spot where every healthy regular matters.

Friday morning becomes the real checkpoint now. Good strength and mobility on exam is encouraging, but the body still has the final word which is great news for the Blue Jays as they look for another series win against the Yankees starting tomorrow.
