The Jose Berrios we know and love is facing a career crossroads, and for the first time, his rotation spot is genuinely up for debate.

Jon Morosi just dropped a truth bomb that every Blue Jays fan needs to hear: depth is great until it forces uncomfortable conversations.
We all respect José Berrios (Acquired via Trade, 2021) for his durability. The guy takes the ball every five days without complaint.
But the reality of his recent performance paints a concerning picture for a team with World Series aspirations.
Last season, his ERA climbed to 4.17, and he finished the year working out of the bullpen—a role he reportedly hated.
With the rotation now stacked with arms like Dylan Cease and a healthy Shane Bieber, the math simply doesn't work in his favor.
It’s the classic "good problem to have," but it’s a nightmare for a proud veteran who expects to be a starter.
Will José Berrios be in the Blue Jays' starting rotation this season?

Loyalty doesn't win championships, performance does

The front office is in a bind: Berrios is owed significant money through 2028, making him a very expensive depth piece.
If young guns like Trey Yesavage (Drafted 1st Round, 2024 by Blue Jays) or Yariel Rodriguez outperform him in camp, what then?
You can't justify blocking a superior arm just because of a contract's price tag.
The rumors of a trade to the Braves or another contender make too much sense to ignore.
Moving him would clear a roster jam and potentially free up salary to address the bullpen or bench.
It feels harsh to talk about trading a guy who extended his deal to stay here, but this is the business of winning.
If Berrios wants to stay in the rotation, he needs to come into Spring Training and undeniably earn it.
No more "eating innings." We need the dominant, All-Star version of José Berrios, or we need to move on.
