Kevin Gausman says manager John Schneider has kept the focus on baseball, even as trade rumors surround the veteran starter before the deadline.
With the trade deadline just around the corner, Gausman remains one of the biggest names connected to potential deals. The Blue Jays have fallen out of contention, making the right-hander an attractive rental for clubs looking to strengthen their rotation.
Despite the speculation, Gausman revealed there have been no discussions about staying in Toronto beyond this season.
“I think the focus was on this year,” Gausman said when asked about a possible contract extension. “No, it hasn't been talked about. … Definitely open to that.”
The answer leaves the door open, even if nothing is on the table today. For now, both sides appear focused on getting through the final days before the deadline rather than negotiating a new contract.
The timing makes that understandable. Gausman has spent weeks answering questions about his future while continuing to prepare for every scheduled start as if nothing has changed.
Trade rumors have reached home
The uncertainty has extended well beyond the clubhouse. Gausman admitted his family is already dealing with major changes, regardless of where he pitches next.
“We're selling our house regardless. So, we're having to pack up everything,” Gausman said. “I'm sure they know.”
His daughters may not understand every detail of baseball's business side, but they recognize something different is happening. Packing up a family home sends a message even when parents try to shield their children from trade speculation.
For Gausman, that personal reality has become part of deadline season. Every outing could be his last in a Blue Jays uniform, while every passing day fuels more rumors about contenders searching for experienced starting pitching.
The veteran has already made it clear he would prefer to remain in Toronto, but he also understands those decisions are out of his hands. The front office will weigh the long-term value of any offer against the possibility of keeping one of its most respected veterans through the end of the season.
Whether Gausman finishes the year with the Blue Jays or joins a contender, his comments made one point clear. He isn't closing the door on returning to Toronto. If the opportunity is there after the season, he'd be willing to have that conversation.
Should the Blue Jays try to re-sign Kevin Gausman if he reaches free agency?
