A new rumour involving the Arizona Diamondbacks might finally provide the Toronto Blue Jays with the trade breakthrough they've been hoping for throughout a frustrating season.
The Blue Jays are reportedly interested in Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly.
Blue Jays eyeing blockbuster trade with Diamondbacks.
Baron Dionis from Jays Journal writes that the Diamondbacks don't have many pieces that would be a logical fit for the Blue Jays, but two names stand out as potential targets: Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly. Gallen, in particular, was recently identified as someone Toronto has reportedly expressed interest in.
"Both are rentals and would likely cost a top prospect. That is a ranked prospect, not exactly a Trey Yesavage. Kelly is on a cheaper contract for the year and has better numbers, so it is likely he would cost more than Gallen, despite his old age. Gallen is younger and was recently a Cy-Young finalist, but is having a bit of a down season." -Dionis
If the Blue Jays were to put together a package for either Kelly or
Gallen, it would likely start with left-hander Adam Macko, who's currently pitching in Triple-A.
Juraron Watts, having shown promise in Double-A, would also be a strong candidate to be included. Should Arizona prefer a higher-upside arm in a more quality-over-quantity- deal, Khal Stephen could emerge as the key piece heading the return.
"There are a lot of possibilties to work with here and Toronto is definitely going to make a splash. Losing a young pitcher is easy to deal from in this organization, especially if landing a front end starter like Kelly or Gallen. Hopefully Ross Atkins can do something exciting." -Dionis
This rumor involving the Diamondbacks does make a lot of sense for Toronto though.
