Louis Varland says John Schneider's staff did right by riding the Blue Jays bullpen hard in 2026. The numbers mostly back him up.
"If you want to win games, you've got to pitch us," the closer said on the final day of the season. He called the bullpen "the strong suit of our team this year."
He's not wrong about that part. From the start of August through season's end, Toronto's relief corps ranked first in the AL with a 3.00 ERA.
Opponents hit just .219 against that group over the same stretch, second-best in the league. It kept a flicker of hope alive into the final couple of weeks.
Varland was the engine. His 1.27 ERA was the best mark across the franchise's 50 seasons.
He took the ninth inning from a wobbly Jeff Hoffman before the season's midpoint. That ERA came over 71 appearances and produced 35 saves.
Louis Varland and Dylan Cease headline a last-place MVP debate
The strikeouts tell the rest of the story. He punched out 97 hitters in 78 innings, easily outpacing his predecessors in the role, Hoffman and Jordan Romano.
Pick a team MVP from this season and the 27-year-old right-hander belongs in the conversation with ace Dylan Cease. Kazuma Okamoto's rookie year earns a mention, too.
That no position player tops the list says everything. A lineup that finished last in the majors in runs scored left the arms to do the heavy lifting.
Here's the tension. Mason Fluharty led all of baseball with 83 appearances, and that's the bill for leaning on a bullpen this hard.
Varland's defence of the usage makes sense from inside the clubhouse. From outside it, Schneider rode his relievers like a contender chasing October with a roster that wasn't built for one.
A bullpen works a lot like a credit card. It covers the gaps beautifully until the statement arrives.
Varland sounds ready to move on anyway. "We're going to learn from that this off season and get back on track next year," he said.
He also admitted there was "a lot of stuff we did right, a lot of stuff wrong" after a wild last-to-first-to-last ride.
Can a relief corps this good stay this good if the offence doesn't show up? The arms bought Toronto time in 2026, and they can't be asked to carry the club alone again.
