Ken Rosenthal states Blue Jays do not have a chance at signing free agent Juan Soto
The Blue Jays are one of the top teams that have been linked to Soto this winter along with the Boston Red Sox, the New York Yankees and New York Mets but many believe they are the team the least likely to sign him.
MLB insider Ken Rosenthal stated that the Blue Jays might have the money to pay Soto but it is everything else including their lack of success in recent years that will keep him from coming to Toronto.
The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal made this exact argument in a recent piece, saying that the Blue Jays may not come away with Soto because he's not looking to sign with a club headed for a rebuild.
It's hard to poke holes in this argument, as the Jays don't have either of their superstars - Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette - locked up on long-term contracts and they're fresh off of a season in which they finished last in the AL East. -Treuden
The worse part is the Blue Jays seem to be in an even worse spot right now as the has lost some key pieces this wwinter such as Jordan Romano and have yet to replace any of them.
During the 2024 season, the Blue Jays finished 74-88, 20 games out of first place and six behind the fourth-place Tampa Bay Rays. With Ryan Yarbrough and Jordan Romano departing an already-depleted bullpen, there's an even bigger hole there than there was at season's end. -Treuden
The Blue Jays are looking to possibly sign some big names this summer but it will be hard to land a superstar like Soto when they have no other star players locked down as Guerrero and Bichette are still waiting on a deal.
This leaves the Blue Jays essentially in desperation mode. The absolute need to land Soto is apparent, but they're going to have to flex some of that financial muscle in other spots too, perhaps in the form of a Guerrero extension? -Treuden
Clearly the Blue Jays need to find a way to land these big name players if they want to improve but the only way to attract them to Toronto seems to be overpaying them.
