MLB insider reveals why the Blue Jays decided to non-tender Jordan Romano
Matheson announced last night right after news broke that Romano had been non-tendered that the reasoning behind the decision had to do with the closer's elbow injury.
Romano had multiple set back during his recovery throughout the 2024 season which kept him out much longer than expected and it seems that his elbow is still an issue which is the main reason they decided to non-tender him.
#BlueJays decision to non-tender Jordan Romano has to be heavily influenced by the health of his elbow, which they know well, and how that projects into 2025.
Obviously, a healthy Romano is exactly what this bullpen needs. He could still return to Toronto at a different number.
Since there were so many risks involved, the Blue Jays decided to walk away from Romano since if they tendered him, they would be paying around $7.75 million for a pitcher with an uncertain future.
Now that Tate and Romano are free agents, this gives the Blue Jays an additional 9.65 million to work with this off-season which could help them land some serious help, especially for their bullpen.
Between Romano and Tate, the Blue Jays have freed up an additional $9.65MM (arb projection) to play with.
