The New York Mets have announced that former Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette will wear number 19 this upcoming season.

MLB's own player page already lists Bo Bichette as #19 with New York, making the uniform switch feel official in a very visual way.
INF Bo Bichette will wear number 19. Last worn by OF Jose Siri in 2025. #Mets
Numbers are never just numbers when a fanbase is still grieving the exit. The last player to wear number 19 for the Mets came during the 2025 season when Jose Siri wore it.

Bo Bichette and Mets No. 19 feels final

As a fan, that little «19» makes the breakup feel way more real than any headline.
What makes it extra weird is that 19 has been sitting in Bichette's orbit for years.
He once said the Blue Jays gave him three number options when he reached the majors, and 19 was one of them, he chose 11 instead.
That's why this lands like a deliberate choice, not a random leftover. He is not trying to cosplay his Toronto self in Queens, he is starting fresh, and the jersey is the first clue.
The on-field part is why the Mets are smiling through the shock.
The Blue Jays will certainly not have an easy time replacing Bichette's production next season but if they are able to get Anthony Santander back up to his usual self, the loss might not be too bad.
For Toronto, the impact is the same ache in a new form. You can replace innings and at-bats, but replacing a long-time face of the room is always messy, especially right after a title run comes up short.
My read is that No. 19 will look normal by May, but right now it is a sharp little reminder that he is no longer in Toronto.
