Ever since Paul Skenes was drafted first overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2030 MLB amateur draft, he has had high expectations for his game to translate into the MLB, and needless to say, he has exceeded those in his rookie season.

Paul Skenes completes his rookie season with a 1.96 ERA and 0.947 WHIP in 23 starts
Skenes had an 11-3 record with 170 strikeouts and 32 walks
Last night he topped his historic rookie season by taking on Juan Soto and the powerhouse New York Yankees, and his performance was exactly indicative of how he played all year long.
He is clearly the top-contender for being named the NL Rookie of the Year as he accomplished an amazing 11-3 record with a 1.96 ERA in 23 starts and 133 innings. Additionally, he has already solidified himself as being one of the league's best strikeout pitchers as he K'd 170 and walked only 32.
Skenes' ERA is the second-lowest for a rookie with at least 20 starts since ERA became an official statistic in both leagues in 1913, above only Reb Russell's 1.90 for the Chicago White Sox in 1913.

He was able to strikeout some of the games best hitters in Juan Soto and Aaron Judge to showcase how dominant he really is.
After he made the Yankees look silly, New York manager had this to say about what he sees in Paul Skenes.
«He's been one of the big stories in major league baseball this year, first pick, doesn't break camp and ends up starting in the All-Star game," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said before the game. «He's obviously had a phenomenal year. I think our guys are looking forward to facing obviously a player that's really, really kind of taken the league by storm and emerged as one of the game's outstanding starters.»

Unfortunately, he will finish 23 innings short of being able to qualify for the MLB ERA title, but if he did, he would have won by a landslide.
