Raphael Devers to the Toronto Blue Jays is starting to look like a real possibility
The Toronto Blue Jays are experiencing uncertainty at third base and should explore trade opportunities with the Boston Red Sox as speculation about player movements increases.
Currently trailing by three games in the American League East standings, the Toronto Blue Jays should prioritize strengthening their infield to enhance their chances of securing a postseason berth.
Blue jays eyeing trade for Red Sox star third-baseman Rafael Devers.
According to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, a trade for star
Rafael Devers isn't entirely out of the question, potentially making the Red Sox a key trade partner for the Blue Jays.
Maddy Hudak from the Toronto Blue Jays On Si writes that the relationship with the disgruntled slugger has deteriorated due to his reluctance to transition to first base after being moved from third base to accommodate Alex Bregman.
Despite the ongoing situation with Devers, the Blue Jays are in urgent need of a third baseman.
:The lack of a true No. 1 guy at third base two months into the 2025 campaign may be the driver behind a desire to trade for Devers." -Hudak
Devers has demonstrated a notably more productive season thus far, boasting a .285 batting average, a .382 on-base percentage, a .515 slugging percentage, and 5 home runs. These figures represent a career-best OPS+ of 149, surpassing his 2022 performance with the Red Sox.
Hudak also writes that the primary consideration for the Blue Jays is whether Devers' defensive capabilities at third base justify the substantial financial commitment. Currently, Devers is under a 10-year, $313.5 million contract, with a base salary of $27.5 million in 2025. Should he continue as a designated hitter, absorbing such a contract could be challenging.
"A move back to third base is certainly more realistic than a switch to first at this point in his career, and the positional experience is a desperate need for this Toronto lineup." -Hudak
We'll have to wait a bit for more development on this story.
