San Francisco Giants add Buddy Kennedy, a former Toronto Blue Jays infielder, for low-cost infield depth.
The signing popped up Sunday, with San Francisco bringing Kennedy in on a minor league contract from last month. The Giants' official transactions log lists the deal on Dec. 15.
Kennedy, 27, has quietly become one of those useful «know the drill» depth bats who can survive the churn. He was a 2017 fifth-round pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks, taken 142nd overall.
His Blue Jays stint was brief but memorable for how fast it turned into a roster carousel. Toronto selected his contract Aug. 5, then designated him for assignment a week later because he's out of minor-league options.
That «out of options» label is basically a travel itinerary in today's game, and Kennedy wore it in 2025. MLB Trade Rumors notes he appeared in 13 MLB games split between Philadelphia, Toronto, and Los Angeles.

As a Jays fan, I still laugh at how quickly he went from taxi squad chatter to real games, then straight back into the transaction grinder.

The on-field part, when he actually plays, has usually happened in Triple-A. In 2025, his MiLB line shows a .280 average with eight homers and a .790 OPS across 328 at-bats.
The bigger picture says the same thing, he hits much better in the minors than the majors so far. MLBTR pegs him at .281/.388/.429 in Triple-A, while MiLB's career line has him at a .283 average with a .379 OBP and 66 homers.
For Toronto, the results didn't get much time to breathe, since his Blue Jays major-league run was only two games before the waiver wire took over. The important «Jays» note is that he showed he can handle the day-to-day defensive asks without drama.
For San Francisco, it's a clean depth play, with Kennedy's ability to bounce between first, second, and third fitting the bench mix and the River Cats shuttle. If he rakes in Sacramento, the next milestone is simple, force the Giants to make room.
