The Toronto Blue Jays are down to only four pitchers in their starting rotation and with Jose Berrios continuing to struggle fans are worried.
The Blue Jays recently decided to cut down to four starting pitchers in their rotation as they optioned Easton Lucas to Triple-A after a few rough starts while they wait for Max Scherzer to return.
Blue Jays pitcher Jose Berrios off to a rough start this year
The Blue Jays rotation has been off to a solid start to the season as Bowden Francis, Chris Bassitt and Kevin Gausman have all been pitching well but the real worry has been Berrios.
So far this season,
Berrios has a 5.02 ERA in 28.2 innings pitched while only striking out 24 batters in that time which is quite the step down from last season where he finished with a 3.60 ERA.
Also not boding well for the Blue Jays is that there are some concerns about their pitching rotation this early into the season. The trio of Chris Bassitt, Kevin Gausman, and Bowden Francis have all been pretty good to date, though Jose Berrios has struggled with a 5.02 ERA through five starts. -Pankiw
Since the season only started less than a month ago,
Berrios has plenty of time to still turn his season around but when combining this with the Blue Jays current injuries, it has certainly been a tough start to the year.
Berrios' early-season struggles aren't a major concern given that he has a lengthy track record of being a very good starter. The bigger concern, however, is the fifth spot in their rotation. -Pankiw
Scherzer's condition seems to be improving and fans are hoping he will return soon because as of right now, the Blue Jays only have four starting pitchers and do not have any real options for a fifth.
Hopefully Scherzer will be back soon because the Blue Jays desperately need him.
