As discouraging as getting swept in three lopsided games by the Tampa Bay Rays was this weekend, the Toronto Blue Jays' slumping offence might not be the only cause for concern. There could be another crisis brewing alongside it.

The Blue Jays have long taken pride in their ability to keep pitchers healthy, carefully managing workloads to prevent ill-times stints on the injured list.

Blue Jays can't afford another injury if they want to stay in the playoff mix, especially at the pitching position.

Rob Longley from the Toronto Sun writes that with Yimi Garcia landing on the 15-day injured list due to shoulder trouble and limited depth to step in, the Blue Jays are suddenly staring down growing concerns about an overlooked and potentially declining pitching staff.
"Already short-handed in both the starting rotation and bullpen, the Garcia injury could have significant reverberations throughout a 25-27 team fighting a mostly losing battle to get to and stay above .500." -Longley

Pitchers Max Scherzer, Alek Manoah, Ricky Tiedemann and Brandon Barriera have all fallen victim to injuries this season with Toronto.
"No matter how long it is for, the absence of a proven and effective reliever has implications beyond the bullpen. With a rotation comprised of just three reliable arms (given the struggles of Francis and the absence of Scherzer) it has further challenged the already marginal pitching depth of the Toronto organization." -Longley

Yes, reinforcements are on the horizon, with Scherzer and Monoah working their way back, but they're still weeks and months away, respectively, Longley also writes.
In the meantime, the outlook remains bleak for a pitching staff that's already stretched thin and showing signs of wear.
