The Toronto Blue Jays closing in on trade with the St Louis Cardinals for 8 time all-star

Early in the 2025 season, the Toronto Blue Jays have identified a glaring weakness in an otherwise well-rounded lineup.
ESPN insider David Schoenfield believes that the Toronto Blue Jays are looking to trade for future Hall of Famer and third baseman Nolan Arenado from the St. Louis Cardinals.
"(Arenado is) off to an excellent start -- with more walks than strikeouts while hitting for average -- so that could create some interest, and there are certainly teams that could use an upgrade at third base." -Schoenfield
While most positions boast league-average or better production, third base has been a clear outlier for the Blue Jays, with the team's players at that spot combining for a -0.1 fWAR and a WRC+ of just 59.
Jackson Roberts from The Sporting News writes that heading into the season, Toronto was optimistic that a mix of Ernie Clement, Will Wagner, and Addison Barger could solidify third base. However, that plan hasn't panned out so far, though there's still time for one of them to find their stride.
"The contract is by far the most complicated aspect of the deal, as Arenado is making $32 million, $27 million, and $15 million over the next three years. The front-loaded aspect of the deal helps an acquiring team like Toronto, but it's still a major budget increase waiting to happen." -Roberts
If the Blue Jays remain in contention and Nolan Arenado is open to waiving his no-trade clause, there's definitely a scenario where a deal between the two teams could make sense.
