The Toronto Blue Jays finally seem to have found Max Scherzer's replacement
The Toronto Blue Jays signed right-handed pitcher José Urena to a Major League contract on Monday, and the veteran made his debut just one day later in the team's 8-3 defeat.
Pitching has been a pressing need for the Blue Jays recently due to injuries in their rotation, and José Urena held his own in his debut, giving up just two earned runs over 4.1 innings.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider is happy with José Urena's pitching performance, despite 8-3 loss last night.
Jon Conahan from The Sporting News writes that in his first start with the Blue Jays, Urena delivered a solid performance and did exactly what was needed, something the team can feel encouraged by.
Here's what Urena had to say following his performance.
«It's the game, it's baseball. Sometimes, [it] doesn't go the way you want. You try to put your mind right and think, and be accountable. Try to have faith and trust what you got, and take the opportunity whenever they bring it.» -Urena
Urena, who debuted with the Miami Marlins in 2015, has consistently posted an ERA above 4.50 over the course of his career.
Conahan also writes that Urena is regarded as a solid pitcher across the league, a sentiment echoed by manager John Schneider following his debut start.
"Being a professional, which Schneider highlighted, is something that can't be replicated by many players in the league. There's a reason why Urena has been around Major League Baseball for as long as he has, and there's something to be said about that." -Conahan
Schneider had nothing but good things to say following Urena's first game.
«We've liked him for a while, we know what he's about. He's a pro.» -Schneider
The Blue Jays will be hoping Urena can maintain that level of performance, even if only for a short stretch.
