Latest draft buzz has the Toronto Blue Jays selecting young talented shortstop prospect Billy Carlson in the first-round of this year's MLB Draft.

With a solid shot at climbing the American League East title, the Blue Jays are in a good position to be active buyers as the MLB trade deadline approaches.

Latest report hints at who the Blue Jays will draft.

Maddy Hudak from Toronto Blue Jays On Si writes that this will mark their first top-10 pick since 2020, making it intriguing to watch which direction the Blue Jays choose to take. The Blue Jays will select at No. 8 overall.
Keith Law of The Athletic recently released his latest MLB mock draft, projecting the Blue Jays to select Carlson.
«I believe the Jays are taking a shortstop here if one of the good ones is available-Carlson, Eli Willits, Wehiwa Aloy-with a college arm as the backup option." -Law

If Carlson is still available at at No. 8, he would fit the Blue Jays' best-player-available strategy in the draft. Although Toronto doesn't boast one of the strongest farm systems in baseball, they found a gem with their previous high school shortstop pick, Arjun Nimmala, taken in the first round of 2023.
"It would make sense for the Blue Jays to double down on a positional player, particularly with the strong draft class featuring several prep shortstops projected to go in the top 15. Carlson has a strong defensive skillset and significant upside as a hitter, according to his MLB Pipeline profile. Some clubs may view his age negatively since he will turn 19 years old on July 29. However, his ceiling as an athlete would be enticing for Toronto at No. 8 overall." -Hudak

If the top shortstop are selected before their pick, the Blue Jays will face plenty of pitching options in the draft. However, they'll likely aim to secure a standout positional player like Carlson.
