The Toronto Blue Jays have finally found themselves a reliable pitcher in Yariel Rodriguez as he has been solid in the bullpen.

During the 2023-24 offseason, the Toronto Blue Jays made their biggest financial commitment to right-hander Yariel Rodriguez, signing the Cuban pitcher to a five-year, $32 million deal.

Rodriguez has found his game when he's under pressure in Toronto.

Tyson Shushkewich from Blue Jays Nation writes that heading into the 2024 season, there was considerable intrigue around Rodriguez's role with the Blue Jays. He reportedly chose Toronto over other suitors because they were willing to give him an opportunity to start, whereas other teams viewed him strictly as a reliever.

So far this season, Rodriguez has been utilized in a range of roles, from opening games to pitching in the late innings, and his performance has notably been stronger in the latter. He even delivered two solid extra-inning appearances, reinforcing his effectiveness in high-leverage, late-game scenarios.
"For 2025, Rodriguez's role has changed for the most part, with many believing that he would be suited for the long-man position in the Jays' bullpen." -Shushkewich

So far in 2024, Rodriguez has been used flexibly, often pitching the first inning or working between the sixth and ninth, with his performance showing more promise in one role over the other. He's even been called on for extra innings twice, and delivered strong results both times.
"Further down the innings chart, Rodriguez sees improved stats through the seventh and eighth innings, which is where he boasts the most amount of work (14 2/3 innings total)." -Shushkewich

Overall, the trend suggests that Rodriguez performs better in high-leverage situations, a fact that manager John Schneider has recognized and acknowledged.
