Toronto Blue Jays are apparently done with Kevin Gausman
Just two weeks after sitting atop the division and celebrating Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s contract extension, the Blue Jays now find themselves in fourth place in the AL East.
The Toronto Blue Jays could look into trading star righty Kevin Gausman.
Jackson Roberts from The Sporting News writes that last season, the Blue Jays offloaded several players at the deadline while sitting in last place. This year, they have even more trade assets if they slip out of contention again, though they're hoping it doesn't come to that. And according to one baseball insider, there is a two-time All-Star starting pitcher who may be on the go come July.
"On Tuesday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post appeared on MLB Network, saying that Toronto could trade star righty Kevin Gausman, whose five-year, $105 million contract runs through 2026, if they're out of the race by the deadline." -Roberts
Gausman, 34, is 2-3 with a 4.50 ERA over 34 innings this season. His numbers are heavily influenced after his latest outing, where he allowed six earned runs in just 2 2/3 innings against the Yankees.
"As long as Gausman's numbers return to their relative norms across his last five years, he should command a hefty prospect package if the Blue Jays choose to cut bait with him a year early. Perhaps they won't want to do so even if they're out of the race, but it's definitely something to ponder." -Roberts
We'll have to wait and see how the Blue Jays do in the months to come before we can even consider dealing any star players at this very moment.
