Due to the MLB's unique rules, the Toronto Blue Jays could be subject to losing a lot of players in their system, the Rule 5 draft deadline is here, and the Blue Jays could be forced to give up players like Josh Kasevich, Connor Cooke, Ryan jennings, Yohendrick Pinango and Jimmy Burnette.
The Blue Jays not only need to worry about who they are signing in free agency, but who will be leaving as well.
Blue Jays prospects being skimmed by Rule 5 draft.
Adam Laskaris of BlogTo covered the situation going on with the Blue Jays under this rule. It could result in over 20 players leaving the organization and being redistributed to other teams in the MLB.
"Each December, any player not listed on the 40-man roster that has been in the major league system for five years or longer (if signed before age 18) or four years or longer (if signed at 19 or older) is eligible to be scooped up for free in what's known as the Rule 5 draft, in reference to the MLB's rulebook."-Laskaris
The Blue Jays are already worrying about their reinforcing their current roster, especially on the mound, but now they need to simultaneously stop their future from leaving to other teams. Not to mention that many of the players are in AAA on that list, meaning they could be directly losing their future.
"The draft order is done in reverse of the MLB standings, meaning Toronto will be near the bottom of the list and unlikely to have too much talent to add. Last year, 25 players were selected in the draft, with the Blue Jays picking up reliever Angel Bastardo."-Laskaris
While yes the Blue Jays can pick up players of their own, having a good 20-30 people potentially leaving is something they need to take seriously. If they don't, the Blue Jays can have a serious issue all the way through the organization.
