The Toronto Blue Jays have very little catcher depth which was on full display when Alejandro Kirk went down last week which is why fans might see Ernie Clement behind the plate this year.
Blue Jays catcher Alejandro Kirk recently took a bat to the side of the head and left the game which is why he missed the last few games but made his much needed return yesterdday.
Blue Jays fans might see Ernie Clement behind the plate this season
The Blue Jays had Tyler Heineman behind the plate the last few games while Kirk recovered which had many thinking about what would happen if Heineman went down as well since the Blue Jays do not have much depth.
Apparently if Heineman were to go down, their only option is Ernie Clement who is their emergency back up catcher which almost happened the other day if Kirk did not end up returning last night.
Clement spoke on possibly going in as a catcher stating that it would be a grind and he would do a whole lot of blocking since he knows he would have a tough time catching everything.
"It would be a grind," Clement says. "I don't think I'd do a whole lot of blocking. I'd probably just try to pick everything.
"It would be interesting." -Clement
The Blue Jays apparently chose Clement as an emergency back up because of his athleticism and because he has held that role before in his career.
Nonetheless, the Blue Jays didn't just randomly bestow the emergency tag on Clement. For one, he's got great hands and is arguably the most athletic player on the MLB roster. Secondly, he's held the role, at least in name, before. -Singh
Hopefully he will never have to gear up but due to the Blue Jays very small catcher depth, there definitely is a chance that he enters a game this season.
