Toronto Blue Jays Ross Atkins has busy 24 hours as he signs multiple players
The Toronto Blue Jays made quick work after general manager Ross Atkins told the media that the team would look two external solutions and signed to free agent pitchers to help the ailing pitching staff.
The Blue Jays have signed Spencer Turnbull along with Jose Urena to Major League deals which should help the Blue Jays stabilize their pitching depth and starting rotation.
Both free agents will give the Blue Jays more depth and experience
Turnbull, 32, appeared in 17 games (seven starts) with the Philadelphia Phillies, posting a 2.65 ERA with 58 strikeouts. The right-hander has made 67 starts throughout his six-year MLB career, posting an ERA of 4.26 over that span. - Colton Pankiw
The Toronto Blue Jays are signing former Phillies Pitcher Spencer Turnbull to a MLB Contract, according to @bnicholsonsmith & @ShiDavidi.
There is a possibility that Turnbull will likely need some time in the minor leagues to help his health as he had struggled with a lat injury all last year.
Urena, 33, recently elected free agency after being designated for assignment by the New York Mets. Also a right-hander, he appeared in 33 games (nine starts) with the Texas Rangers in 2024, posting a 3.80 ERA. He's made 152 big-league starts, posting a 4.80 ERA. - Colton Pankiw
Over the past several weeks, the Blue Jays have struggled at times and have been fighting for wins let alone earned runs as the team struggled to find its offence and find consistency within the starting rotation.
Scherzer still no where near ready as he slowly improves
It's becoming clear that Max Scherzer's thumb inflammation has been far more difficult to beat and be ready to play with the Blue Jays.
He has only managed to play 3 innings for the entire season and has had two cortisone shots in his thumb to help quell the inflammation.
His timeline for his return to the lineup has not been mapped out but he continues to throw bullpen sessions which is a sign that he is slowly improving.
If these recent signings give what the Blue Jays need, Scherzer can take the time he needs to heal his thumb and be ready potentially towards the summer.
