Toronto Blue Jays international free agency took a turn Thursday when Aneudi Severino signed, with quite the unorthodox move.

Toronto officially logged the move as a minor league contract for the right-handed hitting outfielder. It is not the most exciting signings like some other moves that have taken place over the last 24 hours but is still important.
Severino is listed at 5-foot-8 and 203 pounds, which tells you the build is already mature. The club is betting the bat speed plays as he grows into pro pitching and daily instruction.
The Blue Jays are trying to build off of last season and want to keep progressing both in the majors and in their farm system which makes these signings so important.

Aneudi Severino boosts Toronto Blue Jays pipeline

I love the big splashes, but I have learned to respect these quieter bets too. You do not get to stay good in the AL East if you stop shopping for upside.
The key is patience, because this is not a player you pencil into April. Severino is more likely to start in complex ball, then earn his way through the ladder one assignment at a time.
Toronto also has real money allocated to this market. The club's 2026 international bonus pool is $5,940,000, so there is room to take multiple swings, not just one.
My take is simple, this is smart process, not a victory lap. If the Jays are going to keep chasing October after last season's run, they need more hitters who can become trade chips or lineup pieces.
Now the next milestone is the fun part, seeing where Severino debuts and how quickly the contact quality shows up. That is when a transaction line turns into a real Blue Jays storyline.
