The Toronto Blue Jays announced that they have agreed to a one year deal with international free agent shortstop David Vargas.

The report says Toronto signed 16-year-old shortstop David Vargas, and Spotrac lists it as a one-year, $300,000 deal.
The Jays just watched Bo Bichette walk, and any long-range shortstop investment gets amplified immediately.
Vargas' profile is interesting even without the hype music.
Perfect Game lists him as a 2028-grad shortstop at 5-foot-11, 175 pounds, a lefty hitter who throws right, and still only 16 years old.

David Vargas signing follows Toronto Blue Jays shortstop need

Toronto has been busy in the international market lately, stacking defenders and arms while the big-league roster chases another October run.
The timing matters, because this signing chatter arrives right as trade rumors keep circling the outfield.
In 42 games last season, Vargas finished with 30 runs, 22 RBIs, only 14 strikeouts in 144 at bats to go along with a .350 batting average.
My take is Vargas shouldn't be framed as «the next guy,» because that's unfair and unrealistic.
He's a lottery ticket, and Toronto still needs a real short-term plan for the lineup and infield leadership.
Hopefully Vargas will be able to transition his game to professional baseball in 2026 and will continue to build off of the incredible numbers he put up as an amateur last season.
Ross Atkins has made some great moves for the Blue Jays future over the last week or so but has failed to bring in any more big time free agents which has fans beginning to worry.
