An MLB insider revealed in a recent report that the Toronto Blue Jays are closing in on landing all-stars Seth Lugo and Carlos Estévez from the Kansas City Royals in a massive blockbuster deal.

With the trade deadline rapidly approaching, the 55-41 Blue Jays are under pressure to make bold, game-changing moves to stay competitive.

Blue Jays eyeing massive blockbuster deal ahead of trade deadline.

Jackson Roberts from Yahoo Sports writes that the New York Yankees, just two games behind, and the Boston Red Sox, trailing three, are both poised to challenge Toronto's grip on the top spot in the fiercely contested American League East.
"One area for the Blue Jays to address is the starting rotation, which is aging and not performing quite up to its usual standards in 2025. Toronto could dramatically swing the division odds in their favor by bringing in a legitimate playoff-caliber starter." -Roberts

A leading baseball insider believes that the Blue Jays are in position to land both a frontline starter and a reliable closer in a single bold move.
On Sunday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post floated a blcokbuster trade idea that would see the Royals send starter Lugo and closer Estévez to Toronto. In return, the Blue Jays would part with infielder Orelvis Martinez, along with outfield prospects Emmanuel Bonilla and RJ Schreck.
"The Royals are still looking to add, not subtract. But if they continue to disappoint, Lugo has an opt-out and would become an obvious sell piece." -Heyman

Lugo, 35, would be the crown jewel of the deal. He's posted an impressive 2.67 ERA over 17 starts this season, following a standout 2024 campaign that saw him finish as the Cy Young Award runner-up. If the Royals are willing to part with him, he'd easily be the top starting pitcher moved at this year's trade deadline.
"But Estévez is a big piece as well, and he comes with control for 2026 (club option for 2027 as well). Lugo is making $15 million this season, while Estévez is making $10 million." -Roberts

Is Toronto truly all-in? Landing a deal like this would be a clear statement that they're fully committed to making a deep postseason run.
