Trey Yesavage gave John Schneider's Blue Jays some needed pitching hope Friday by heading to Dunedin to begin his rehab assignment.
That move matters because Toronto has been waiting for Yesavage since late March, when the club put the 22-year-old right-hander on the 15-day injured list with a right shoulder impingement.
Now the next phase has started. The Blue Jays officially sent Yesavage to the Dunedin Blue Jays on a rehab assignment on April 3, giving one of the organization's biggest young arms his first real step back toward the majors.
For Toronto, this is more than a routine lower-level roster note. Yesavage opened 2026 as one of the club's most important rotation depth options after his rapid climb through the system in 2025.
That climb was no joke. Yesavage started last season in Single-A Dunedin, moved through all 4 levels of the system, then reached the majors in September before finishing the year with 139 2/3 innings across the regular season and postseason.
The Blue Jays were always going to manage his workload carefully in 2026 because of that jump. Then the shoulder issue showed up and slowed everything down before the season even got going.
Dunedin is the first stop, not the destination
This is why the rehab assignment stands out. Toronto is not just parking Yesavage in the Florida heat for maintenance work. It is finally getting him back into game action, which is the only part of the build-up that really counts for a pitcher this close to the big leagues.
MLB's injury tracker said Yesavage threw 44 pitches over 2 2/3 innings in his rehab start Friday, and the club will now decide whether he needs another outing in Single-A or can move up to Triple-A Buffalo.
That gives Toronto a clear short-term roadmap. The Blue Jays do not need to rush him, but they do need healthy innings, especially after early pitching hits across the roster.
Schneider sounded encouraged before this point, and the tone around Yesavage had already improved in recent days. MLB.com reported that both Schneider and Ross Atkins viewed his recent progress in Dunedin as “very encouraging.”
That is a big deal because Yesavage is not just another prospect waiting in line. MLB Pipeline lists him among baseball's Top 100 prospects, and Toronto clearly sees him as part of its 2026 pitching picture once the shoulder is right.
So this assignment is the headline, but the bigger story is what it could lead to. Trey Yesavage is back on a mound in games, back on a Blue Jays affiliate roster, and back on the path Toronto badly wants him to finish.
This is going to big to get Yesavage back with all the injuries the Blue Jays currently have to start the season.
