Kevin Gausman's name has cracked at least one trade deadline power rankings list, and Chicago looks like a real fit as his time in Toronto winds down.
Gausman is having the worst season of his five-year, $110 million deal with the Toronto Blue Jays, now sitting at a 4-9 record with a 4.59 ERA across 21 starts.
Even with those numbers, he remains a durable arm who can take the ball in a big spot, exactly what a White Sox rotation chasing a real playoff run needs behind its front line.
"So would the Marlins trade Sandy Alcantara? The Giants definitely will move Robbie Ray," one insider wrote, framing Gausman as part of a broader starting pitching market that includes names like the Reds' red-hot Brady Singer.
That kind of company puts Gausman in a real conversation among available veteran arms, even in a down year by his own standard.
But the more interesting idea floated is Chicago going after two Blue Jays starters in the same trade, pairing Gausman with Shane Bieber.
Bieber has genuinely turned his season around, tossing seven shutout innings against the White Sox last week and following that with seven one-run innings against Tampa Bay on Thursday.
Why targeting both arms makes real sense for Chicago
Bieber's season-long numbers still show the early struggles, sitting at a 4.70 ERA across six starts, but his last two outings represent exactly the kind of form a contender wants walking into a deal.
Landing both pending free agents in one swoop would give the White Sox real rotation depth without needing multiple separate trades before the deadline.
Toronto, at 47-56 and last in the American League East, has every incentive to move both arms rather than risk losing them for nothing in free agency this winter.
