Bryan Abreu is the exact type of flamethrower the Toronto Blue Jays have been missing in the late innings, and the price is right.
The Blue Jays have already done the heavy lifting this winter by adding Dylan Cease and Andres Gimenez to a core that is ready to win now.
But if we are being honest with ourselves, the bullpen still feels one elite arm short of a World Series unit.
The buzz surrounding Abreu makes too much sense to ignore. He is coming off a massive career year with the Astros where he stepped up as the closer.
The numbers are staggering. We are talking about a 2.28 ERA and a 25 percent strikeout-minus-walk rate. He was worth 2.2 fWAR in 71 innings, which tied for the third-highest mark among all big-league relievers.
That is not just good, that is dominant.
The Astros are currently retooling after missing the postseason, and with Abreu entering his final arbitration year owed just $5.85 million, he is a prime trade candidate. Ross Atkins needs to pick up the phone before the Yankees do.
Adding Abreu to a bullpen that already features Jordan Romano and the newly signed Tyler Rogers would give John Schneider a three-headed monster to shorten games. Imagine trying to hit Abreu's slider in the 8th immediately after facing Rogers' submarine delivery. Good luck.
The cost will hurt but it is worth it
To get a reliever of this caliber, you have to give up real talent.
My proposal is straightforward. The Blue Jays should offer Adam Macko (Drafted 7th Round, 2019 by Seattle) and Jace Bohrofen (Drafted 6th Round, 2023 by Toronto) for Abreu.
Macko is a lefty with electric stuff who is knocking on the door of the majors, fitting the Astros' need for controllable pitching depth.
Bohrofen offers them a power-hitting outfield prospect to restock their system. It stings to lose Macko, especially with his strikeout upside, but the Jays have a surplus of starting pitching depth right now with Trey Yesavage (Drafted 1st Round, 2024 by Toronto) already cementing his spot in the big league rotation.
You trade potential for proven dominance every single time when you are in a championship window.
This is the move that tells the clubhouse the front office believes in them. It tells Vladimir Guerrero Jr. that we aren't just hoping to make the playoffs, we are planning to dominate them.
The rotation is set. The lineup is revamped. Go get the final piece.
