Alejandro Kirk gave John Schneider a needed lift Thursday when the Blue Jays catcher resumed throwing after thumb surgery.

That is the first real on-field progress Toronto has had on Kirk since he fractured his catching thumb five games into the season.
The update came from Schneider, who said Kirk has started baseball activity again at the Blue Jays player development complex in Dunedin.
For Toronto, that matters because Kirk is not just another injured regular. He is the starting catcher, one of the club's steadiest defensive pieces, and a big part of how Schneider likes to run a game.
Kirk's season was cut off almost as soon as it started. He landed on the injured list on April 4, then underwent surgery on April 7 to repair the fractured left thumb.
At the time, Schneider said Kirk would miss at least 6 weeks, which made this less about a quick absence and more about surviving a real stretch without him.
Toronto has felt that loss all month. In just 22 plate appearances before the injury, Kirk had 1 home run and 3 hits, but his value behind the plate has always run deeper than a short batting line.

Alejandro Kirk's throwing update changes the tone

This does not mean a return is around the corner. Resuming throwing is an early rehab marker, not a final clearance point for a catcher coming off thumb surgery. That position asks for constant stress on the hand, whether it is receiving, throwing, or handling foul tips.
Still, it changes the conversation. Before this, Kirk's recovery was mostly about waiting. Now there is a visible baseball step attached to it, and that gives Schneider a little more reason to believe the path back is moving.
It also lands at a good time for the Blue Jays. Sportsnet reported that José Berrios and Addison Barger are also moving through rehab, which means Toronto is finally starting to see some traffic coming back toward the active roster.
That broader context matters. Injuries have forced Schneider to patch together different parts of the roster, and catcher is one of the hardest spots to fake for long. Kirk's absence changed the shape of the lineup card and the pitching plan at the same time.
So even a small update carries weight here. Kirk is not back yet, and the Blue Jays still need patience, but a catcher throwing again after thumb surgery is the first sign that this has moved from shutdown to build-up.
For a team trying to get healthy without losing ground, that is the kind of step worth watching closely. Alejandro Kirk finally has one.
