Matz to the divisional rival, the Boston Red Sox, in exchange for infielder Blaze Jordan.
The Boston Red Sox are finalizing a trade to acquire left-handed reliever Steven Matz from the St. Louis Cardinals, sources tell ESPN. The deal is agreed to and pending medical review.
The #RedSox have acquired LHP Steven Matz from the St. Louis Cardinals, in exchange for minor league INF Blaze Jordan.
Matz only spent one year in Toronto during the 2021 season but became a fan favorite quickly as it was one of the best season of his career as he finished with a 3.82 ERA in 29 games pitched with a 14-7 record.
So far this season in St Louis, Matz has been pitching extremely well as he currently has a 3.44 ERA with 47 strikeouts in 32 pitches to go along with a 5-2 record.
This will be a tough move for Blue Jays fans as they will now have to see a lot more of Matz but unfortunately in a Red Sox uniform as they continue to chase the Blue Jays for first place in the AL East division.
The Blue Jays had a rough series against the Orioles this week but are still 4 games ahead of the New York Yankees and 5 games ahead of the Boston Red Sox but there is still a lot of baseball left.
