Chad Dallas joined John Schneider's active roster Thursday as Toronto optioned Hayden Juenger and designated Tanner Andrews for assignment.
The Blue Jays logged all 3 moves on 06/04/26, hours before their series finale in Atlanta. Dallas had been on the taxi squad, and his player page now shows Toronto selected his contract and activated him that same day.
That makes Dallas the real story here. The 25-year-old right-hander comes up from Buffalo with a 4.50 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 36.0 innings.
Those numbers point to swing-and-miss life more than finished polish. Dallas has made 8 starts in 10 outings, so Toronto is not bringing up a one-batter bullpen arm.
The timing matters because the Blue Jays are piecing together innings against the Braves. Their probable pitchers page lists Mason Fluharty against Chris Sale for the 7:15 p.m. EDT game at Truist Park.
That is where Dallas fits. Toronto needs coverage tonight, and Dallas is the freshest arm on the board with starter usage in the upper minors.
Juenger heads back to Buffalo after a quick first look in the majors. He debuted on 05/31/2026 and posted a 13.50 ERA over 2.0 innings in 2 appearances before Thursday's option.
Toronto chose length over short relief
The option does not erase why Toronto wanted Juenger up in the first place. His Triple-A line still shows a 3.15 ERA with 23 strikeouts in 20.0 innings, which is strong enough to keep him in the next-wave bullpen conversation.
Andrews got squeezed even though his first Blue Jays look was clean. The 30-year-old put up a 0.00 ERA over 3.0 innings in 2 appearances after making his MLB debut on 05/25/2026.
That part gives the DFA a little bite. Toronto selected Andrews' contract on May 25, optioned him back out on May 27, and now has exposed him to the rest of the league 8 days later.
This says more about the staff churn than Andrews alone. The Blue Jays had already selected Juenger on May 30, traded for Simeon Woods Richardson on June 3, and now have made another pitching swap before one more game in Atlanta.
There is also a clean baseball reason behind it. Dallas gives Schneider a longer runway if Fluharty can only cover the front edge of the game, while Juenger profiles more as short relief right now. That is a better fit for tonight's matchup.
For Toronto, the message is plain. Chad Dallas is up because the Blue Jays need innings tonight, Hayden Juenger is back in Buffalo, and Tanner Andrews lost his roster spot in the latest pitching shuffle.
Should Chad Dallas stay with the Blue Jays after tonight?
