Austin Voth is out, and John Schneider now has Josh Fleming as the Blue Jays' newest bullpen answer tonight.
Toronto announced Monday that it selected Fleming to the Major League roster and designated Voth for assignment. Fleming will be active right away.
That makes this more than a routine bullpen swap. It is a roster-flex move from a club already shuffling arms in the first week of the season.
Voth had only just been selected from Triple-A Buffalo on April 5. He gave Toronto 2.2 innings in his lone MLB outing this year, but the Blue Jays still chose a different path one day later.
The squeeze matters here. Sportsnet reported Voth was out of options, which left Toronto with little room to move him around once it decided to change the bullpen mix.
Fleming gives Schneider a left-handed arm at a time when Toronto has been searching for steadier relief coverage. The Blue Jays have already cycled through multiple pitching moves since the season opened.
Toronto chose flexibility over a short leash
The transaction graphic said it all: Voth's name was pushed aside, and Fleming's was dropped into the active roster box for tonight's game.
That visual matched the bigger baseball point. Toronto is not waiting around for the bullpen picture to settle on its own.
Fleming is not arriving as a headline-grabber. He is arriving as a usable lefty who can help Schneider cover innings and give the staff a different look out of the pen.
There is some experience behind that call. Fleming has logged time in the majors before, and his profile has long leaned toward ground balls and contact management more than swing-and-miss flash.
For Voth, the timing is rough. He signed a minor league deal with Toronto on March 25, reached the majors on April 5, and was designated for assignment on April 6. That is a fast turn even by early-season bullpen standards.
For the Blue Jays, the message is clear. This front office is going to churn the last spots in the bullpen until it finds something it trusts.
And for Schneider, that means tonight's move is not really about one reliever leaving and another arriving. It is about a club already managing its bullpen like every roster spot has to earn tomorrow.
This is a very interesting move by the Blue Jays who are looking to switch things up after a few rough games.
