The 26-year-old right hander was designated for assignment by Toronto earlier today as they unveiled their 40-man roster. Zulueta has never seen major league action, spending his entire career bouncing around between A, AA and AAA. Last season the Cuban native pitched for the buffalo Bison of Triple-A, going 4-4 with a 4.50 ERA in 45 outings, striking out 73 hitters in 64.0 innings.
After starting only 7 games and being cemented starter, he has found more of his success after being moved to the bullpen. Zulueta was the 35th ranked prospect on TSN Blue Jays Reporter, Scott Mitchell's, Top 50 Blue Jays Prospects list. A big difference from being their 2023 3rd ranked prospect.
After some less than stellar play in spring, and the Jays needing to make room from Brian Serven and Danny Burgers, Zulueta was Designated for assignment where he was quickly snagged up by the Cincinnati Reds off outright waivers. In Spring, he went 0-1 accumulating a staggering 10.08 ERA in 5 games, with a 7.2 BB/9.
Zulueta was never able to elevate his game above AAA, it shows that no matter how high their potential, some prospects don't make it and blossom to what they are touted to be. It was time for the Jays to move on from him as they have found players with better numbers to take his spot.
