Jesús Sánchez gave John Schneider a jolt Sunday when he stumbled rounding first, then stayed in the game after a quick check.

That was the first thing that stood out in Toronto’s series finale against the Twins. Sánchez hit a ball into the gap, then appeared to blow a tire as he came out of the box and turned the bag.
For a Blue Jays club already watching every limp and every awkward step, the scene felt heavy right away. Schneider and the trainer came out to speak with him, and the dugout had to make a fast call.
The good news came just as fast. Sánchez stayed in the game, which changed the story from a possible injury blow to an in-game scare Toronto managed to dodge.
That matters because Sánchez is not just filling a spot on the lineup card. He was batting cleanup Sunday as the Blue Jays went after a series win at Target Field.
Toronto also did not have much extra room for more lineup chaos. George Springer was already out after Saturday’s toe scare, so losing Sánchez in the middle of the afternoon would have left Schneider patching together another thin look.
The timing made it even sharper. The Blue Jays entered the day at 16-17, with rookie right-hander Trey Yesavage on the mound against Joe Ryan in a game that could hand Toronto the series.

Toronto avoided the kind of mid-game hit it could not afford

That is the real takeaway here. Sánchez going down around first base is the kind of play that can flip the mood of a whole dugout in seconds, especially for a team that has already spent too much of April and May adjusting on the fly.
And Sánchez has shown enough lately to make his spot matter. He homered and drove in 3 against Cleveland last weekend, giving Toronto at least a glimpse of the left-handed damage it hoped his bat could bring.
He also has been part of a lineup still trying to settle on its best shape. Sunday’s order had Yohendrick Pinango leading off, Kazuma Okamoto hitting second and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the designated hitter spot, which already told you Schneider was juggling pieces.
So when Sánchez stayed in, that was not some minor footnote. It meant Toronto could keep its cleanup hitter in the game and avoid another scramble in a series finale with real value.
There may still be some soreness or some follow-up attention after the game. But in the moment that mattered, Sánchez stayed on the field, and that was the result the Blue Jays needed most.
For Schneider, this was one of those small Sunday wins that can matter more than it looks. Jesús Sánchez went down, Toronto held its breath, and the Blue Jays got to keep going without losing another bat.
