Blake Purnell is joining John Schneider's organization after 1 start with the Sussex County Miners.

The Blue Jays purchased Purnell's contract from Sussex County, giving the right-hander a fast jump from indy ball into affiliated baseball. Sussex County announced the move Sunday.

That kind of move always gets attention because it shows Toronto saw something worth grabbing right away. Purnell had barely unpacked with the Miners before the Blue Jays stepped in.

He made just 1 start for Sussex County. In that outing, he allowed 3 runs on 7 hits over 4.1 innings, with 2 strikeouts and 3 walks.

The bigger background matters more than that lone line. Sussex County said Purnell is a 6-foot-3 right-hander from Boynton Beach, Florida, and that this is his second full season in pro baseball.

Before joining the Miners, he spent the last season and a half with the Milwaukee Milkmen of the American Association. In 2025, he posted a 4.73 ERA across 51.1 innings with 45 strikeouts.

Toronto is taking a quick depth shot on a live arm

That is the real angle here for the Blue Jays. This is not a headline move for Rogers Centre. It is a system move, and Toronto has made a lot of those lately as the organization keeps searching for more pitching depth.

Purnell's MLB player page already lists him in the Blue Jays system, which confirms the contract purchase pushed him straight into affiliated ball.

For Schneider, the impact is indirect for now. Purnell is not walking into the major-league bullpen, but every new arm matters for an organization that has spent weeks patching pitching at multiple levels.

There is also a little speed to this move that stands out. Sussex County signed him in March, he made 1 regular-season start there, and now he is gone. That is a fast climb, even by indy-ball contract-purchase standards.

Toronto likely saw value in the frame, the arm, and the chance to get him into its own development setup before somebody else did. That is an inference, but it fits the timing of how quickly this happened.

Purnell also brings some starter background, which gives the Blue Jays more than just a one-inning relief flyer. Sussex County noted he appeared in 46 games with 21 starts over the last season and a half before this jump.

So this is the kind of move Toronto hopes pays off quietly. Blake Purnell went from the Sussex County Miners to the Blue Jays after 1 start, and now the club gets to see whether another indy-ball arm can turn into something more inside its system.
