Eric Lauer and the Toronto Blue Jays face extension questions as arbitration and rotation depth reshape 2026.

A Newsweek report flagged Sportsnet writer Nick Ashbourne's view that Lauer is unlikely to get extended after next season. The left-hander joined Toronto on a minor-league deal, then earned a call-up late April.
"Lauer exceeded all reasonable expectations by a significant margin in 2025, but some skepticism is warranted considering it was his first strong MLB campaign since 2022," Ashbourne wrote Thursday. "Buying high on a player who's slated for a long relief role seems like a dicey bit of business." -Nick Ashbourne

Lauer's 2025 results made that prediction feel surprising on the surface. He went 9-2 with a 3.18 ERA, 102 strikeouts, and a 1.11 WHIP across 28 appearances, including 15 starts.
Those workload numbers matter because they show why the Blue Jays valued him as more than a matchup arm. His 26 walks over 104.2 innings translate to a 2.24 BB per nine rate, which supported the ERA.
The backstory also explains why the team may hesitate to buy high. MLB.com detailed how Lauer pitched in Korea during 2024 while trying to rebuild his value, then used that path to re-enter a big-league role in 2025.

Eric Lauer extension debate hits Toronto Blue Jays

The fan read is simple, Lauer became the safety net when a starter exited early or a bullpen day needed structure. That kind of trust is real, but it does not always translate to long-term dollars.
Ashbourne's argument, as relayed by Newsweek, centers on role and timing. If Toronto sees Lauer trending toward long relief behind a deeper rotation, paying for past performance can look risky.
That rotation depth is not theoretical, either. Toronto's offseason included a headline move, signing Dylan Cease to a seven-year, $210 million contract, which naturally tightens the path to steady starts.
Contract mechanics add another layer. Lauer was tendered for 2026 and remains on the arbitration track, and Spotrac lists his 2025 salary at $2.2 million, so the next raise comes before any free-agent leverage.
For the Blue Jays, the cleanest outcome is letting the season define the role before talking term. For Lauer, another year of swingman value keeps the next milestone clear, reaching free agency after 2026 with momentum intact.
