The Toronto Blue Jays and Japanese third baseman Kazuma Okamoto have reached agreement on a free agent contract.
Okamoto arrives in Toronto after a long career with the Yomiuri Giants in Nippon Professional Baseball, where he was a middle-of-the-order staple and a key run producer. His profile centers on power production, a skill the Blue Jays have targeted in recent offseasons.
Okamoto hit 31 home runs with 87 RBI in 2023 and followed with 36 homers and 100 RBI in 2024, according to NPB official stat lines. Those figures consistently placed him among the league leaders in slugging and extra-base hits for his position.
Defensively, Okamoto has spent almost his entire professional life at third base. Scouts rate his arm strength as above average with reliable hands, and Defensive Runs Saved metrics in Japan have generally graded him positively compared to peers.
There were rumors that the Blue Jays were interested in signing Okamoto and possibly turning him to an outfielder but there has been no specifics on that since the signing.
Blue Jays sign Kazuma Okamoto
The Blue Jays have been looking for long-term stability at the hot corner, where recent seasons saw a rotation of options that the club did not extend beyond backup roles. Okamoto's addition fills that need and also adds insurance for infield flexibility.
BREAKING: Japanese third baseman Kazuma Okamoto and the Toronto Blue Jays are in agreement on a free agent contract, sources tell ESPN.
The exact amount of the contract has yet to be announced but the team will be announcing the exact details shortly.
MLB.com notes the contract with Okamoto includes a multi-year guarantee with performance incentives tied to plate appearances and awards recognition. The deal is structured to allow stability for both sides as Toronto integrates a high-profile international signing into its lineup.
Okamoto played eight seasons in Nippon Professional Baseball, all with the Yomiuri Giants, and was a multiple-time All-Star selection. He consistently ranked in the top tier of hitters in OPS and slugging percentage, making him one of the most decorated hitters in Japan over the past decade.
Toronto's front office emphasized the value of adding a proven middle-of-the-order bat who can also provide veteran leadership in a clubhouse transitioning with younger pieces. Okamoto's arrival marks the Blue Jays' second major free agent signing of the winter, following earlier additions aimed at shoring up rotation depth.
The expectation within Toronto's organization is that Okamoto will slot into the heart of the batting order and immediately contribute to run production, particularly in high-leverage situations. His track record overseas suggests the ability to adapt to Major League pitching after an adjustment period.
More details to come.
