The Toronto Blue Jays ended up getting a gift from Shane Bieber when he accepted his player option but now they are looking at a possible contract extension.

At the start of the off-season, everyone expected Bieber to enter free agency but he shocked the baseball world by accepting his player option and returning to Toronto.

Possible contract extension in the works between Shane Bieber and the Blue Jays

Bieber is headed into the 2026 season with the Blue Jays with a salary of $16 million which is a lot less than he could have made if he hit the open market but it looks like he was desperate at another shot at the World Series with the Blue Jays.
According to reports, there is a good chance that the Blue Jays push for an extension especially if he continues to build off of how he pitched in the playoffs and could return to his form from before his surgery.
There's a strong case to extend Bieber, especially if the Blue Jays believe he can get back to his pre-injury form. In the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, Bieber had a 1.63 ERA and 2.07 FIP in 77.1 innings pitched, winning the American League Cy Young. The following two seasons, Bieber produced a 2.97 ERA and 2.92 FIP in 296.2 innings pitched, with a 27.8 K% and 5.8 BB%. -Delaney

There is certainly risk involved if the Blue Jays end up signing Bieber to an extension since he has not seen much action since 2023 and there is a risk that he does return to the pitcher he was prior to the surgery.
There's risk involved for both parties when it comes to extensions. Bieber has missed significant time in 2021, 2023, 2024, and 2025 due to injuries. There's no telling how much time he'll miss if the Jays extend him, but it's not a good sign. Moreover, who knows if Bieber will return to the form he showed before the 2023 season? -Delaney

If the Blue Jays end up locking him down to a contract prior to the season, they might end up lading him on a cheaper deal but the issue is that if they end sign him to early and he struggles this season they will stuck with him.
The entire situation with Bieber's extension is very delicate but could end up paying off for Toronto depending on how he plays.
