Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Daulton Varsho is in his final year or arbitration and the team need to get a contract extension done sooner rather than later.
At the end of 2026 Varsho will officially be a free agent which ideally the Blue Jays will avoid if they get an extension done as he is a massive part of their outfield and should be for the future as well.
Still, Varsho needs to be extended as soon as possible. Varsho will begin the 2026 season as a 29-year-old, but he's still got plenty of years of being an important player in him. His defence in centre field alone is a reason for the Blue Jays to re-sign him, as he had 10 Defensive Runs Saved, 9 Outs Above Average, and 6 Fielding Run Value in just 550.1 innings in centre field last season. -Delaney
There are some big worries when it comes to letting Varsho walk at the conclusion of next season since he will likely get attention from the majority of teams and if the Blue Jays do not want to overpay, locking him up as soon as possible would be the best plan.
Ideally the Blue Jays should look at extending him this off-season since if they let him enter the 2026 season without an extension, he might tell them that he wants to wait until free agency to see what is out there.
Simply put, the smartest and best way financially to go about this extension with Varsho is to do it as soon as possible.
The Blue Jays certainly have some much more pressing contracts at hand right now but once all of that is settled, Varsho should be next in line.
