The Toronto Blue Jays take on the Boston Red Sox this evening for the first game of a big series at the Rogers Centre and ahead of the game, the Red Sox announced that former Jays catcher Ali Sanchez has been designated for assignment.

The Blue Jays announced in early August that they decided to DFA Sanchez as they needed to make room on the roster for Tyler Heineman in which the New York Mets ended up claiming him.

Ali Sanchez DFA'd by the Red Sox ahead of game against the Blue Jays

The Red Sox have decided to activate Wilmer Abreu off the injured list before their first game against the Blue Jays which resulted in Sanchez being DFA'd.
The Red Sox have officially activated Wilyer Abreu from the IL. Ali Sanchez was designated for assignment to create roster space.

The #RedSox today reinstated outfielder Wilyer Abreu from the 10-Day Injured List. To make room on the active roster, Boston designated catcher Ali Sánchez for assignment.
Sanchez has moved around quite a bit this season as he is now looking for his fourth team of the year and it is very late in the season.
In 2025, Sanchez has played 12 games for the Blue Jays and Red Sox in which he has a total of 0 homeruns, 0 RBIs, a .217 batting average and .217 on base percentage.
While Sanchez might end up being a free agent until the off-season since there is only a week left to the season, he could still end up getting claimed off waivers from Boston.
One decent option would be for the Blue Jays to claim him as it would give them some much needed security at the catcher postion.
The only worry is that they already don't know who to option next to bring back Anthony Santander and it will not be any different if they bring back Sanchez.
