Ty France drove in two of the Padres' three runs Sunday night. It wasn't enough, and San Diego now trails Milwaukee 2-0 in the NLDS.

Jackson Chourio walked the Padres off in a 4-3 Brewers win. His only hit of the night was a two-run single.

San Diego managed just five hits as a team. France had two of them, both singles, in three at-bats.

He's been the hottest bat in that dugout this October. France is 7-for-15 across four postseason games and owns a hit streak dating back to Sept. 26.

That's as many playoff hits as he collected in 30 at-bats from 2019 through 2025 combined. All of it in a single month.

And here's the Toronto part. The Blue Jays let him walk after the 2025 season, and the Padres scooped him up on a minor league deal worth $1.35 million.

Toronto's power-starved lineup could have used a 21-homer bat

He paid that back in a hurry. The veteran first baseman played 133 games this season and hit .295 with 72 RBIs and an .865 OPS.

Compare that to his Toronto stint. After arriving midseason from the Twins in 2025, he hit .277 with one home run and a .693 OPS across 37 games.

He mostly served as a bench bat and occasional first baseman on that World Series club. With Vladimir Guerrero Jr. entrenched at first, the Jays viewed him as a luxury.

Fair enough at the time. But Toronto went on to hit the fewest home runs in baseball in 2026, and that luxury now looks like something the lineup badly needed.

That's a miss by the front office, plain and simple. A $1.35 million gamble that slugs .502 is exactly the cheap upside a club with Toronto's payroll can't wave off.

It's the couch you left on the curb that your neighbour reupholstered. Now it's the nicest thing in his living room.

Would he have saved Toronto's season? No, because the Jays' problems ran far deeper, from a crowded injured list to Guerrero's regression.

For now, San Diego needs him to stay hot just to keep breathing in this series. The Padres are out of margin, and their best October bat is a guy Toronto decided it could live without.
