Former Toronto Blue Jays closer Jordan Romano has been having an awful season with the Philadelphia Phillies and it looks like he might be forced into retirement.
Former Jays closer Jordan Romano might be forced into retirement
The 2025 season has not been easy for Romano as he has given up 39 earned runs in 49 games with a 8.23 ERA and only 8 saves in 42.2 innings pitched.
"In just one season, he's given up 39 earned runs in 49 games in Philadelphia, more than half the 74 he gave up in 231 games across six seasons with Toronto. He's posted an 8.23 ERA in 42.2 innings." -Laskaris
Romano is currently on IL with a right finger inflammation and is expected to begin his rehab assignment soon with the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs but a star date has yet t be announced.
"Romano is on a one-year, $8.5-million deal with the Phillies, with no real certainty that he'll pitch in the majors the rest of this year - or moving forward." -Laskaris
A team might be willing to give Romano one last chance of a very small deal this off-season as he will once again be a free agent but it might be a big risk with how he has performed this season.
The one chance Romano has at salvaging his 2025 season is recovering in time to pitch a few more games this season and put together some solid performances which could raise his value for this winter.
It has been quite the fall for Romano in the last 12 months as just a couple years ago he was considered one of the best closers in the MLB and now he is uncertain if he will have a contract next season.
