The New York Yankees announced that they have reached an agreement with outfielder Cody Bellinger as the Toronto Blue Jays are left empty handed.
Jeff Passan reports the Yankees have an agreement with Bellinger, and Toronto is watching another big bat land in its division.

Contract terms were not included in the initial post, so the fine print still matters but it looks like it is a five year deal worth $162.5 million with a full no trade clause and a $20 million signing bonus.
Cody Bellinger's deal with the Yankees is for five years and $162.5 million, sources tell ESPN. There are opt-outs after the second and third season, a $20M signing bonus and a full no-trade clause.

This stings because the Jays were at least adjacent to the conversation all month, even while insiders wondered if Toronto truly liked the aging profile.
Jim Bowden's point was blunt, the swing risk later in the deal scares teams.
It also comes right after Toronto got outmuscled for Kyle Tucker, who signed with the Dodgers last Thursday.
The Jays have now lost two “solve the lineup” paths in the same winter.
Cody Bellinger signing leaves Toronto Blue Jays chasing
As a fan, it's hard not to feel like Toronto keeps arriving one step late.
Bellinger is still a real player right now, not a nostalgia act. In 2025 he hit .272 with 29 homers, 98 RBIs, 13 steals and a .814 OPS, plus 5.1 WAR, and he turns 31 in July.
For the Yankees, it's a clean add because he can bounce between first base and the outfield without drama. They've also been open about wanting him back, so the fit is not surprising.
For Toronto, the impact is uglier, because the need is obvious and the supply just shrank.
A left-handed bat with pop would have balanced a lineup that too often let opponents match up late.
My take is the Jays can't keep treating “close” as a strategy, especially with the AL East this tight.
Does Cody Bellinger choosing the New York Yankees change your confidence in the Toronto Blue Jays plan?
