Incredible update for Toronto Blue Jays prospect Trey Yesavage
Trey Yesavage has been dominating Florida State League hitters with the Dunedin Blue Jays, sparking speculation about when he'll earn a promotion.
It seems the Blue Jays are holding off on promoting Yesavage until conditions at High-A Vancouver improve.
Yesavage is becoming one of baseball's top prospects.
According to Baseball America, known for its comprehensive coverage of MLB prospects, didn't hesitate to give the former East Carolina pitcher a promotion of its own.
For the first time this season, the site updated its Top 100 prospects list, and Yesavage made the list for the first time.
Matt Postins from the Toronto Blue Jays On Si writes that Yesavage was one of 12 new prospects to enter the rankings, as five players graduated and 11 others dropped off after the season's first month.
His standout performance made him a clear inclusion, earning him the No. 98 spot. The Blue Jays also had shortstop Arjun Nimmala at No. 58 and pitcher Ricky Tiedemann at No. 95 on the Top 100 list. That has been apparent to anyone who has watched him pitch.
"Yesavage is five games into his professional career and is 1-0 with a 2.31 ERA. He has 36 strikeouts and eight walks in 23.1 innings. Batters are hitting .163 against him. He is already the No. 2 prospect in the organization per MLB Pipeline." -Postins
Earlier this week, Yesavage was named Florida State League Pitcher of the Week after earning a win against the Clearwater Threshers, the Phillies' Class A affiliate.
He delivered six nearly perfect innings for the Dunedin Blue Jays, allowing just four hits, no runs, and no walks while striking out eight.
Prior to joining the Blue Jays, Yesavage was selected as the team's No. 20 overall pick last July out of East Carolina, where he had established himself as one of college baseball's top pitchers.
"Last season with ECU he went 11-1 in 15 starts with a 2.02 ERA. He also struck out 145 and walked 32 in 93.1 innings. He won the AAC's pitching triple crown, leading the conference in wins, ERA and strikeouts. He also held batters to a .154 average. He also tied both the ECU and AAC record for most strikeouts in a season." -Postins
He was a semifinalist for two of baseball's top honors, the Golden Spikes Award and the Dick Howser Trophy, and also a finalist for the College Baseball Foundation's National Pitcher of the Year.
With his continued dominance, a promotion to Vancouver can't come soon enough for hitters in the Florida State League.
