Jeff Hoffman isn't ready to accept that his time in Toronto is winding down, even as his old team reportedly wants him back.
Bob Nightengale reported the Philadelphia Phillies "would love" to have Hoffman back in their bullpen, and it's easy to see why given his history there.
Between 2023 and 2024, Hoffman posted an 8-5 record with a sizzling 2.28 ERA and 0.94 WHIP, striking out 158 batters over 122.2 innings across 122 relief appearances with Philadelphia.
That's genuinely elite production, exactly the kind of track record that makes a reunion make sense on paper.
Hoffman himself isn't rushing toward that outcome, though.
"As the trade deadline approaches, the Blue Jays reliever is hoping the team avoids a sell-off and makes a playoff push," Shi Davidi reported.
That's a real statement of intent from a player who could easily accept the writing on the wall given where Toronto sits in the standings.

Hoffman's results with the Blue Jays have been a mixed bag by comparison. He's compiled a 14-14 record with 38 saves during his time in Toronto, but his 4.26 ERA overall and 11 blown saves have tested plenty of patience along the way.
His current season sits at a 4.11 ERA across 49 appearances, respectable but nowhere near the dominant stretch that defined his Philadelphia years.
A reunion could genuinely help both sides. Philadelphia gets a proven arm who's already excelled in that exact bullpen before, while Toronto lands real trade value for a player who's been inconsistent enough to frustrate fans regularly.
It's a bit like a musician returning to the studio where they recorded their best album, betting the same environment brings out the same results.
Does Hoffman's hope for a Toronto playoff push reflect genuine belief in this roster, or is it simply the natural instinct of a competitor not wanting to be labeled as part of a losing season?
Whatever Hoffman wants, Toronto's record makes selling the far more likely outcome, and a reunion with Philadelphia looks like real business waiting to happen before the deadline closes.
