Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider recently explained during an interview the team's decision to leave Max Scherzer off of the ALDS roster.
John Schneider explains why the Blue Jays kept Max Scherzer off the ALDS roster
Many were surprised to see Scherzer left off the 26 man roster yesterday especially since Chris Bassitt was kept off the roster as well which left the Blue Jays with only three starting pitchers.
Max Scherzer and Chris Bassitt are allowed to be in the dugout despite not being on roster. And they will be there.
Schneider explained to reporters that if the Red Sox moved on instead of the Yankees, Scherzer would have been on the roster but against the Yankees the Blue Jays wanted more lefty options.
If Red Sox had advanced, good chance Max Scherzer would have been on the roster per John Schneider. Against Yankees Jays wanted lots of lefty relief options.
This was certainly a risky move by the Blue Jays going with only 3 starting pitchers for the series since if the game goes past 3 they will be forced to have a bullpen game.
However, Scherzer clearly was having a tough time at the end of the season and having him pitch in the playoffs could have been very risky especially with how much he struggled in the first inning of his last few starts.
Hopefully the Blue Jays close out the Yankees in 3 straight games and won't need to pitch a bullpen game in game 4.
