The Toronto Blue Jays are still pushing to bring back shortstop Bo Bichette and after quite a bit of silence there has finally been an update.
There has been rumors that other teams are gunning for Bichette this off-season, which puts some additional pressure on the Blue Jays to get a deal done as soon as possible.
Update on Bo Bichette projected contract with the Blue Jays
Ryan Finkelstein from Just Baseball spoke on Bichette and the Blue Jays recently stating that getting a deal done now that they have found their starting pitcher needs to be the main priority for the rest of the off-season.
Bo Bichette was very close to being an all-time World Series hero for the Blue Jays, hitting an early three-run homer in Game 7 that had Toronto in line to win it all," Finkelstein wrote Thursday. "Now, the Blue Jays have to decide if that was Bichette's last game played in their uniform. This is not a knock on him, it is more just how their roster is constructed. -Finkelstein
Finkelstein added that he believes that the Blue Jays will make an over with an average salary of $26 million per season on a 8 year deal which would end up being a $208 million contract.
When it comes to the contract, Willy Adames got a seven-year, $182 million deal last year. That is $26 million per season for a shortstop who has a different game than Bichette's, but one who would conceivably have a similar market value. Since Bichette is 18 months younger than Adames was when he hit free agency, it is fair to expect that he could receive at least one more year than him on his deal. An eight-year deal at $26 million per year brings us to $208 million. -Finkelstein
There has been some worries that due to Bichette's injuries over the last two seasons, giving him a long-term deal could create some problems in the future for the Blue Jays.
While there is certainly some risks involved, losing Bichette to free agency and having to find a replacement would certainly cause a lot more problems.
