Philadelphia Phillies add some catcher depth as they agree to terms with former Toronto Blue Jays catcher Rene Pinto.

Philadelphia has been pretty clear about the priority. Dave Dombrowski flat-out said catcher is the main focus, and the club still hasn't closed the loop with Realmuto.
So the Phillies did the practical thing and added another backstop to the pile. MLB Trade Rumors reported Philadelphia signed Rene Pinto to a minor league deal with a big league spring invite, citing The Athletic's Will Sammon.
«Free agent catcher Rene Pinto has signed a minor league contract with the Phillies for the 2026 season,»

Pinto, 29, is basically a glove-first insurance policy who has touched the majors before but did not in 2025. Pinto has played a total of 83 games across 3 seasons in the MLB with a total of 10 home runs, 32 RBIs and 52 hits in 225 at bats.
This also fits Philadelphia's current depth chart reality. MLBTR noted Rafael Marchán and Garrett Stubbs are the only other catchers in the organization with MLB time, so adding another experienced body makes sense.
The big question is still Realmuto, because he's not some replaceable part. MLB.com noted he played 134 games in 2025 and hit 12 homers, and Statcast credits him with an elite 1.86 pop time plus real wheels for the position.
But age is age, and the bargaining reflects it. MLB.com framed 2025 as his weakest offensive season in a decade, even with the durability and defense still intact.
For Toronto fans watching, it's a reminder how fast catching gets thin across the league. Spring camps always expose which teams planned well, and which teams just hoped.
If Realmuto comes back, Pinto is a depth at Lehigh Valley and a break-glass option. If he doesn't, this spring turns into a real competition, and that's where the nerves start.
