Former Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Nate Pearson has had a tough time with the Chicago Cubs this season as he is now in the minors and still have a hard time.

The Blue Jays traded Pearson at last year's trade deadline to the Cubs in exchange for shortstop Josh Rivera and outfielder Yohendrick Pinango and Pearson had a stellar end to his 2024 season in Chicago.

The Cubs announce back in mid April that they had optioned Pearson down to Triple-A after having a very tough start to the season with a 10.38 ERA in the 8 games that he pitched in.
Unfortunately for Pearson, his struggles have continued in Triple-A instead of improving as he currently sits with a 4.82 ERA which is now terrible but far from worthy of a call up back to the MLB.
Pearson's initial tenure with the club was strong, posting a 2.73 ERA through 19 outings down the 2024 stretch. That changed in 2025, as the right-hander started struggling out of the gate, allowing 10 earned runs through 8 2/3 innings. He was optioned to triple-A on April 15th and hasn't found much success there, allowing five earned runs through 9 1/3 innings to the tune of a 4.82 ERA while opponents are hitting .286 off his stuff. -Prasad

The worst part is, Pearson is not the only former Blue Jays pitcher struggling in Chicago as Julian Merryweather has also been having a very hard time with very similar numbers.
Their pitch metrics are fairly similar, with Merryweather coming out on top in the majority of their statistical categories. Merryweather does have more innings to play with, giving more of a shot at success. Merryweather is still effective with his pitch location and effectiveness, where Pearson lacks. -Prasad

Clearly both these former Blue Jays will have to seriously turn things around if they plan on making a comeback to the MLB but for the time being, it does not look like it is a real possibility.
