The Toronto Blue Jays have quite a few expiring contracts in 2026, including star pitcher Kevin Gausman but it looks like they will likely not be bringing him back.
The Blue Jays will have even more to deal with next off-season with all the players they have on expiring deals which is why they need to capitalize as much as possible on the upcoming season.
2026 expected to be Kevin Gausman's final year in Toronto
Gausman signed a six year, $108 million deal back in 2021 with the Blue Jays and has been a massive part of their organization since then while also being their best pitcher for many years.
The 35 year old pitcher has had some phenomenal seasons in the MLB but due to his age, he is clearly in the final years of his career despite still being very solid on the mound.
According to reports, there is a good chance due to his age that the Blue Jays end up letting him walk at the end of the season.
"It's possible the team could have reservations about a pitcher entering his age-35 season after throwing 223.2 total innings, including the playoffs. It might pay to see him looking healthy and strong early in 2026 before starting any negotiations." -Nick Ashbourne
While a contract extension with Gausman is unlikely, there is still a possibility that it could happen depending on how well he does in 2026 for them.
Just because he is old, it does not mean that they will walk away from him if he finishes the upcoming season with an ERA below 3.50.
However, it does seem to be the most likely scenario since Gausman has shown signs of regression over the last two seasons and will likely be the case this year as well.
