After missing out on a potential trade involving Josh Naylor, the Blue Jays have a chance to redeem themselves with a key acquisition at the deadline.
Naylor is set to become a free agent after this season, making him an ideal trade target for Toronto at the deadline.
Hometown boy on Blue Jays' radar as trade deadline looms.
Matthew Sookram from Jays Journal writes that Naylor had reportedly caught the attention of the Blue Jays front office, and it's easy to understand why. The Mississauga, Ontario native was coming off a strong 2024 campaign, where he set a new personal best with 31 home runs.
"The left-handed hitting Naylor has also been dangerous with men on base all season. He owns an OPS of .918, driving in 40 runs in 120 at-bats with runners on, in all situations. When those runners move into scoring position Naylor is still effective, with a .767 OPS, driving in 32 runs in 66 at-bats." - Sookram
Although Naylor isn't known his his defensive prowess, he'd be an ideal option as a full-time designated hitter. His ability to play first base also provides the Blue Jays with valuable insurance in case Vladimir Guerrero Jr. goes down with an injury.
"There are several variations of the lineup the Blue Jays can write out that includes both Naylor and Santander when he returns from his IL stint.
Even putting Naylor in a platoon role wouldn't be the worst idea. His numbers against righties (.315 batting average, .886 OPS) far outpace his numbers against lefties (.234 batting average, 618 OPS) this season." -Sookram
Although Naylor appears to be thriving out west, posting a 124 OPS+ and a .346 on-base percentage, the 2024 All-Star should be a serious trade deadline target for Toronto this year.
